How to Quieten the Mind – Part Two!

A lot of people don’t know how to quieten the mind. Most people try to avoid their negative thoughts and shy away from focusing on them as much as possible, thinking they will just go away.

Many people even do their upmost to distract themselves from their thoughts or try to shut them out and numb themselves often by the usual ‘emotional suppressors’ – eating, drinking, drugs, smoking or simply lazing mindlessly in-front of the TV.

But often at best, all of the above are just a temporary fix, alongside long-term harmful mental and physical damage.

So, what can you do instead?

Well, I have a simple but really effective exercise that is worth practicing anytime you feel overwhelmed with over thinking, can’t sleep, or perhaps have too much internal chatter or negative thoughts that just won’t seem to go away!

The following exercise will quickly quiet your thoughts, slow them down until they just don’t bother you anymore!

Thought Watching

1)   Observe, watch, just notice and focus on your rapid thoughts.

2)   Watch them, observe them just as if you were a cat watching a mouse hole

3)   Do this for 3-5 minutes

4)   Notice what happens to your thoughts. Did they slow down? Did your thoughts start to fade away?

5)   Repeat above again for another 3 – 5 minutes and see what happens!

Good luck and keep practicing!
