Would You Like to Overcome Fear of Flying and Quickly?

Fear of flying

These days there are many people from all walks of life are looking how to overcome their fear of flying quickly and easily.

In-fact there are so many wanting to overcome their fear of flying. It’s one of the most common phobias in the world, next to the fear of public speaking and fear of death.

Thousands upon thousands of people want to get over fear of flying quickly.

It can very often be a debilitating fear to overcome. It prevents many people from flying quickly or at leisure to see loved ones, take part in an important business meeting or travel the world and see new and exciting places.

Fear of flying causes us to make alternative and inconvenient travel plans, to travel by car, train, even boat. To do so adds hours sometimes days to a journey that could have been taken often in a matter of hours.

You’ve got to overcome your fear of flying these days if you want to lead a normal life, and especially I would say to be really successful in business. It’s a global business world isn’t it.

These days everything is about speed, about quick access, about quick communication. That’s why it’s essential to get fear of flying help before your competition takes over, before the tropical pristine beaches you’re missing out on become spoilt, before your daughter gets married in an exotic location.

How to overcome fear of flying quickly is like a holy grail for those affected, because often they don’t know how to get help, they don’t know where or who to turn to. They also may think it takes a long time to cure a fear, or is hugely expensive. But actually it’s not so, as you will soon learn.

So what are the typical symptoms of fear of flying? Maybe you’re familiar with some of them – palpitations, panic attacks, shortness of breath, sweaty palms, flushes face, racing pounding heart, a feeling you just want to get off the plane – now. Maybe you can add more to this list!

What are typical reasons people have fear of flying? Well, turbulence is high on the list, as is feeling claustrophobic, feeling trapped, hemmed in, a lack of control, fear of crashing, fear of dying, fear of leaving loved ones behind. Perhaps you have your own unique reasons for this fear.

Many go to their doctor for anxiety medication just to cope with a pending flying fear, or self-medicate with sleeping pills. Some even resort to alcohol which in-itself has lots of undesirable side-effects, not only during the flight but once you reach your destination you feel groggy, tired, some even hung over. Not exactly a great way to start a holiday or business meeting, or to meet a loved one!

My Fear of Flying Trauma Story (if you are afraid to read it skip to the asterisked paragraph below *)

Several years ago I was flying from Bangkok to the island of Phuket in Thailand. As it was a domestic flight it was a relatively small plane. I didn’t usually feel anxious when flying, but there was something about the compact size of this plane that made me a little on edge.

The plane took off and all was fairly smooth throughout the flight, apart from a little turbulence here and there.

The problem, and my fear, started as we approached Phuket runway. As we were coming in to land, and were in-fact what looked like only feet away from touching down the plane made a very sharp turn back up.

I had a front row window seat so I got a very good view of what was happening.

The plane climbed back up into the sky and started to make a very large circle around the island. Oh I thought, that’s odd!

As I looked out the window I could see the ocean below and parts of the island we were passing over. The plane wasn’t descending and circled the island once more.

The man sat next to me leaned over, ‘That’s a worry’ he said. ‘Is it?’ I said. ‘Yes, I’m a pilot and I know. If we circle three times that means there’s a problem!’

Sure enough we circled three times, then started to circle a forth time. My anxiety increased. I wish he hadn’t told me what circling means!

My mind started to race and imagine all sorts of bad scenarios. Namely crashing. One of the worse aspects I considered was crashing into the sea. Crashing and drowning!

It may seem strange but then I pondered my life. I didn’t want to die this way, and so young too I thought.

The plane then started to descend, thankfully I thought. All must be okay. A moment of ease came over me.

That however was short-lived. As I was sat in the front row one of the air-hostesses was sat opposite me for landing. She was on the internal phone to the pilot. I couldn’t hear or understand all she was saying in response to the pilot. I did however hear the word ‘BRACE-BRACE!’ Not what I wanted to hear.

A huge wave of fear came over me. This is it I thought, we’re going to crash. I wish my seat was further back – I definitely didn’t want to hear that!

As we descended toward the runway I also wish I didn’t see and hear the stewardess praying right there in-front of me. I couldn’t believe my eyes! (Looking back on it now having overcome my fear of flying I find that somewhat amusing!)

As we approached the runway I could see fire-engines approach to the side. That didn’t fill me with confidence.

However, we touched down with a little bump – and all was well. I breathed a huge sigh of relief as my fellow passengers all applauded the safe landing. Thank God I thought, we made it!

The stewardess got on with her duties of getting the passengers off the plane, with no explanation given to the passengers by her or the pilot. As she got off the plane she was greeted by some ground-staff who I could see gave her some smelling salts. (Again looking back on it I find that amusing also now!)

I spoke to my fellow passenger pilot who having spoke to the ground staff learned that the wheels weren’t down for the first time we tried to land. They must have been stuck.

I felt traumatized as you can imagine. Thankfully it didn’t have a lasting affect on me because as soon as I got to my hotel I performed some of my QEPR techniques on myself and the trauma was quickly released.

If I hadn’t been able to do that I’m sure the experience would of had a lasting negative impact on my life. And may have even prevented me from flying again.
